Campaign Story

There are 9,605 children in foster care in the state of Michigan (National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect, 2025). Over 1/3 of those children (3,295) come from just the 3 counties, Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb, around Metro Detroit. Many of these children enter foster care for preventable reasons with it often being as simple as not having a bed to sleep in.

We believe the local church is the solution to the child welfare crisis and because of this, we developed a network of church partners who want to do something about this. We call it the For The One Care Network. These partners meet tangible needs for families in and beyond those 3 counties, with a particular focus on providing beds for children who would otherwise not have one. The pilot for this program started in July of this year. In its first 3 months those churches have provided 189 beds to vulnerable children in the Detroit area. They have also met additional tangible needs totaling $51,754 for 367 children and their families.

Through a generous partnership with a local nonprofit, we receive 40 complimentary beds each month to do this work and can order additional twin frames, mattresses, and bedding for about $150 per child. On average we have needed 25-30 additional beds per month so far. To this point we have purchased those beds or have scrambled to find another source to get additional beds each month. This is not sustainable. That is where you come in. We would like to secure a few months of bed funding to allow us to focus our efforts on securing other long term donation sources and scaling this program to serve even more families. All giving to this campaign goes directly toward purchasing those beds and every $150 given represents a child having a comfortable and safe place to sleep and a church having an opportunity to connect with its vulnerable neighbor.
